Pura Vida! (by Gabriela Melgar)

On March 14, 2014 Makarios, a ministry of Andrews University, headed out on a mission trip.  Several employees from Griggs International Academy are participating in this mission trip (pictured above).

Traveling to the beautiful country of Costa Rica we are presenting a week of prayer for the Adventist University of Central America students. The people of Costa Rica live by the country’s motto “¡Pura Vida!” (pronounced “POO-rah VEE-dah) which in English simply means “Pure Life!”  But in the context used in Costa Rica, it means so much more.  Doing a quick Internet Search, I found this description:

¡Pura vida! Means that no matter what your current situation is, life for someone else can always be less fortunate than your own.  So you need to consider that maybe…just maybe, your situation isn’t all that bad and that no matter how little or how much you have in life, we are all here together and life is short…so start living it “pura vida style”.

As a mission group, we have adopted ¡Una Vida! (“One Life”) as our mission’s motto.  We know that Jesus is coming soon and time is short.  We want to live fully and meaningfully because Jesus promised us “abundant life” (John 10:10).  We are excited to experience this abundance to hasten Jesus’ coming.  This trip of joyful service will bring meaning to our lives and we pray will positively impact the lives of others.  We have one life.  We can use our one life to help others understand the significance of the One Life that was sacrificed so that we can have Pura Vida.  We are looking forward to this week of Service.  When we get back from our trip, we will share some of our travel diaries.  We want to be ambassadors of “Pura Vida” – both from Andrews to Costa Rica and from Costa Rica back to you.  Please pray for us as we embark on this exciting mission.
