Light in the Darkness

As we start a new year we want to focus on who we are in Christ. Jesus has many different names in the Bible, some of which we will discuss this year. There are many times that He refers to himself as the Light. “I Am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) Why do you think that is and what does that mean to you personally? How does being a light apply to us today?

“You are the light of the world. A city that is sent on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

Have you ever stood outside as darkness settled and all of a sudden tiny lights began to blink around you? Isn’t it incredible how the fireflies’ little bodies can light up the whole yard? Now think of what we could do as mere humans if we loved and cared for each other. We could chase the darkness away and fill this world with God’s light.

There is a way to have light just like the firefly and that is by having a relationship with our Heavenly Father. The more time we spend with Jesus the more like Him we become. We are transformed into His character. As we change, Jesus wants the light that fills us to overflow and shine out to others. In other words we are to be examples to everyone in everything we do and say.

As you go through this new year we challenge you to take time to spend with Jesus and be a light for others.
