Have you ever had homemade bread? You put the dough in the oven and watch it rise. The delicious scent floats around the room. The warmth of the freshly baked loaf melts in your mouth. Mmmm makes me hungry. We have all experienced some type of hunger but have you ever been hungry for a book? In fact there is one book that we are told to eat. It’s nutritious, flavorful, and satisfying. No I’m not crazy, a book like this actually exists. It’s the Bible. Now you don’t physically chew on the pages but when you read it you are “eating the words.” You take in what you read and “digest” what each story, verse, and word means. Not only are you spending time with Jesus but you are filling your body with His word. Just like you satisfy your physical hunger with a meal you are able to satisfy your spiritual hunger with special messages from our Heavenly Father. In Matthew 4 verse 4 Jesus said “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Just like it is important to keep our bodies healthy and growing we also need to keep our minds and hearts in good shape.
Sometimes starting to read the Bible can be a little difficult. It’s like sitting down to a full course meal not knowing what the food is going to taste like. That’s OK though, if you can only start with a slice that is better than going hungry.
Here’s a recipe for spending time with Jesus
